February 15th will mark a full year since your PSUFA bargaining team officially began negotiating a new contract with the University. In that time, the administration and its lawyers have not only failed to commit to the fair contract language that you deserve, they have unlawfully broken the terms of the previous agreement and threatened to roll back the union rights and protections you fought hard for in the past.
In response to your demands for fair pay, Admin has offered minimal raises that barely keep up with inflation.
In response to your calls for increased job security, Admin has proposed the elimination of two-year contracts and the end of your assignment rights as we know them.
In response to your need for academic freedom safeguards, Admin first rejected negotiations on the topic and has since refused to commit to enforceable protections.
And in response to your good-faith expectation that the integrity of your previous contract would be respected, Admin violated state law by holding your benefits funds hostage, continuing to attack those resources by insisting on the complete elimination of the economic hardship fund for adjunct faculty, also known as the "Adjunct Financial Assistance Fund." This is one of the only safety nets provided by the university that adjuncts need more than ever as they face cancelled classes and program closures under President Ann Cudd and the Board of Trustees’ austerity agenda.
While, at the bargaining table, your Union has fought back against this dismal vision for PSU’s adjunct faculty, we are reaching the limits of what is possible through negotiation alone.
Now more than ever, it is clear that we must demonstrate a credible strike threat to the University in order to protect the hard-won gains of past agreements, to achieve new provisions for adjunct faculty success, and, most importantly, to ensure that PSU lives up to its promise as the kind of institution that its faculty, staff, students, and community deserve.
Will you stand collectively with your fellow adjuncts to demand a fair contract?
Pledge to Strike
NOT A DUES-PAYING MEMBER OF YOUR ADJUNCT FACULTY UNION?
You can sign the strike pledge, but ultimately you won’t be able to vote to authorize a strike until you become a PSUFA member. A strike authorization vote is one of the most important decisions a union can take! Striking is a collective decision and the more of us that vote, the stronger the decision.
